The Aunt Betty Pond carriage road loops through a serene and diverse variety of habitats. Old-growth stands of mixed forest, young-growth glades of birch and aspen, meandering mossy brooks, and the secluded marsh make this walk one of my favorites. Whitecap Stream cascades down the western flank of Cadillac Mountain after an overnight rain. These small brooks may all but disappear in the late summer, but they are an important habitat for amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals—and, yes, landscape photographers.

Everything in an image must be interesting to look at and must contribute to the flow of energy within the composition—a goal difficult enough to achieve even with the familiar rectangular-format camera. The Noblex cameras I use capture a full 140-degree panoramic view—this approximately matches most people’s peripheral vision. Many so-called panoramic cameras make a 90- to 105-degree image and trim off the top and bottom to create the wide format. With a revolving lens and a curved film plane that matches the arc of the turning lens, the Noblex creates an image that is consistently sharp from corner to corner.

Some folks complain about the crowds at Acadia. A simple solution is to get up early and take a hike away from the road. Abraham Somes settled with his family at the head of Somes Sound in 1761. Somesville became the oldest continuously inhabited town on Mount Desert Island, and is today a picturesque and lovely little village. This gracefully arching bridge is one of the most photographed man-made structures on the island, and is recognized around the world. Far fewer people visit this small cemetery on Baker Island, about five miles from Mount Desert Island.
